KARACHI: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said the 'disrespect to martyrs and ghazi' and attack on military installations on May 9 was intolerable and reiterated his firm resolve to bring all perpetrators to justice, ARY News reported.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the K-IV water supply project in Karachi, the Prime Minister said that no one should object if the Pakistani government punished the May 9 arsonists under the law, as the United States did to its citizens for the attack on the Capitol Building on January 6, 2021 .

“Today in the city of Quaid, we are all ashamed of what happened on May 9 in Lahore. Justice demands that we punish perpetrators like the rioters of the Capitol building on January 6, 2021. If this punishment was legal, then no one should object if we do so under our law for desecrating our martyrs,” he said.

Prime Minister Shehbaz said that the threads of the May 9 conspiracy were connected with foreign countries and that the desecration of martyrs and facilities at the instigation of Imran Niazi was the darkest chapter in the nation's history.

Recalling his recent interaction with the family members of the martyrs, the Prime Minister said that their dear ones had made sacrifices for the country but arsonists had desecrated their memorials.

The Prime Minister said that a person who always accused others of looting resorted to arson when he was arrested on corruption charges.

"What kind of politics is this," he asked, saying no political leader had ever instigated an attack on Jinnah House or military installations in the past despite facing many difficulties.

He said the MQM and PPP leaders — both representing Sindh — have sent a message of national unity, which is essential for national development.

He said the coalition government had met enormous challenges through collective wisdom, including floods, inflation, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as well as the shameful schemes of chaotic politics that culminated in the darkest day of May 9.

Pledged to revive Pakistan's lost grandeur, the prime minister lamented the unnecessary delay in the K-IV project, which was supposed to provide drinking water to millions of people in Karachi.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asked the relevant ministries to provide continuous funding to ensure the completion of the project without further delay.

He said the project was "most important" to him because residents of Quada City were deprived of drinking water despite being the city with the highest income and taxation.

The Prime Minister assured that he would give the project top priority in the upcoming budget and provide maximum funds for its early completion.

"Shehbaz Speed"

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister (FM) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that the prime minister is keenly focused on the development of Sindh, especially Karachi.

He said the two main political parties in Karachi elected the prime minister and his government had a "super majority" in Sindh. He said that the people of Sindh are also pinning hopes on the Prime Minister to solve their problems.

Bilawal said that the K-IV project was facing huge delays and that Karachi needed "Shehbaz Speed" to solve its problems.

Regarding the floods, the foreign minister said concerted efforts were needed to rehabilitate people in Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, South Punjab and other areas, including metros.

He said around 52 percent of Sindh's education infrastructure was damaged by the floods, which affected the education of around 47 percent of the population.

Bilawal Bhutto said that leaders of PPP, MQM and other parties also faced jail and other hardships but they always stood for democracy without resorting to violence.
