Before joining WWE, Sebei wrestled for Ring of Honor under the ring name El Generico, using the persona of a luchador from Mexico with the catchphrase "Olé!"[7] From his debut in 2002 until 2013, he wrestled in masks. he began wrestling with WWE without a mask, eventually winning the NXT Championship while in WWE's developmental brand NXT, and becoming a three-time Intercontinental Champion after being promoted to the main roster. Beginning in 2022, Zayn's popularity with fans began to rise due to his critically acclaimed work with The Bloodline.[8] In addition to his success in WWE, Zayn has also wrestled in the main event of several pay-per-view events, including WrestleMania 39.

Sebei achieved much success in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) as a two-time PWG World Champion and five-time World Tag Team Champion. He is the only person to have won both annual PWG tournaments, the Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament in 2010 and the Battle of Los Angeles in 2011. He also held the ROH World Television Championship and the ROH World Tag Team Championship as part of this. team with Kevin Steen, with whom he later won the 2010 Feud of the Year Award from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. He is also a two-time IWS World Heavyweight Champion for the Montreal-based International Wrestling Syndicate (IWS). After wrestling internationally, he won the wXw Unified World Wrestling Championship in Germany and DDT Pro-Wrestling's KO-D Openweight Championship in Japan.
